Foundation protection is the whole point
A 2,000 sq ft roof sheds roughly 1,200 gallons of water in a one-inch storm. Working gutters route that to a handful of controlled discharge points; failed gutters dump it in a line along your foundation. Aluminum shrugs off salt air, which is one reason it’s our default. Wind and volume are the real coastal tests: a nor’easter doesn’t drop rain politely into the gutter, it drives it sideways for hours at volumes that overwhelm undersized systems. Guards, ice dams, and retiring the ladder
If your lot has oaks or pines — most of the county does — micro-mesh gutter guards are the difference between gutters that work in a storm and gutters that clog exactly when it matters. Guards also earn their keep in winter: gutters don’t cause ice dams (attic heat does), but a gutter packed with frozen leaves gives snowmelt nowhere to go, and the backup ends up under your shingles. One honest scheduling note: if your roof is close to the end of its life, do the roof replacement first — drip edge and gutter apron install correctly with the new roof, and the tear-off won’t rain nails into brand-new gutters. We sequence both when you bundle them. Code-compliant installation and project records can support condition documentation, but the insurer determines coverage and claim outcomes under the policy. How much does gutter repair cost?
A short reseal, loose hanger, damaged outlet, crushed downspout, failed corner, and rotten fascia are different repairs. Ask for the defective section, cause, material, and connection to be named in the scope. When seams fail repeatedly, pitch is wrong, or the existing size cannot carry the roof drainage, replacing the affected run with seamless gutter may cost less than recurring patches.
